Our measuring points at the waste incineration plant

Waste incineration ENOTEC GmbH

This application note describes the need to measure oxygen and the sum of combustible components at different installation sites of a waste incineration plant.

Thermal waste treatment is a complex chemical process. Precise knowledge of the conditions in the combustion chamber and downstream of the boiler (where the O2 value is measured) allows the system to be optimised: maximum throughput of waste (thus maximum energy generation) with minimum residues and minimum pollution.

As some of the waste on the grate is incinerated sub-stoichiometrically, secondary air must be supplied in an afterburner zone in order to completely oxidise the unburnt components. This ‘two-stage’ combustion is used to keep the combustion chamber grate temperature as low as possible so as not to exceed the melting point of the ash and thus prevent caking from molten ash. In addition, a requirement of the 17th BImSchV must be met: a flue gas temperature after the last combustion air supply of at least 850°C, a dwell time of at least 2 seconds and a minimum oxygen content of 6 %.

The high quality and versatility of ENOTEC products means that the customer can cover all important measuring points for combustion monitoring and flue gas cleaning control with just one supplier:

O2 boiler end (after economiser before E-filter):Combustion control and combustion monitoring: The residual oxygen can be used to make a statement about the quality of combustion. Target min. 6 vol. % O2. The COe value (i.e. the sum of the combustible components in the flue gas) serves as a backup for combustion control and monitoring.

O2 after electrostatic precipitator: With the O2 value before and after the electrostatic precipitator, leakage monitoring and an assessment of the effect of dust separation can also be achieved here. This is also the O2 reference value for flue gas cleaning.

O2 after DeNOx: The O2 delta before and after the cleaning stages can be used to make a statement about the quality of the cleaning. The O2 value is also an indicator of leakages.

O2 after scrubber: The O2 delta before and after the cleaning stages can be used to make a statement about the quality of cleaning. The O2 value is also an indicator for leaks and the reference value for the activated carbon filter.

O2 at the chimney: The O2 value at the chimney is required as a reference value in order to fulfil the requirements of the 17th BImSchV. ENOTEC also offers complete turnkey emission measurement at.

Flue gas cleaning:

Electrostatic precipitator (E-filter): First cleaning stage in which the ash particles are filtered out of the flue gas.

DeNOx: Flue gas denitrification. Ammonia water is sprayed in as a reducing solution to reduce NO and NOx to N2.

Scrubber (HCl and SO2 scrubber): HCl: The addition of hydrogen chloride produces a hydrochloric acid that retains and dissolves heavy metal compounds, for example. SO2: There are various processes. In the wet process, for example, gypsum can be produced as a by-product by adding a hydrated lime suspension.

Activated carbon filter: Final cleaning stage, where further pollutants such as heavy metals are adsorbed from the flue gas in the hearth furnace coke.

Reference value: For official emission monitoring, e.g. according to BImSchV, an oxygen reference value is required to which all measured emissions are standardized.

Our products

Designing the combustion process efficiently

The oxygen concentration is the most important parameter when assessing whether a combustion process is being operated efficiently. The simultaneous information about the COe content also enables the plant operator to immediately assess whether their process is also safe.

ENOTEC has set itself the task of producing the best measuring device in the world for every process, which measures in situ, i.e. directly in the process. We also offer TÜV-certified (QAL1 / MCERTS) and SIL2 with a 1oo1 selection and ATEX-certified products, which have a long service life and are extremely low-maintenance and can be used continuously for years.
